In the final stretch, beneath Cedar Butte, my journey paralleled the BIA 2 so closely that eventually I just walked down the road. The only easily accessible area is the Sheep Mountain Table, which is 7 miles one-way, and is rarely maintained. The South Unit of Badlands National Park is an oddity, having been born of an administrative decision that incorporated a large tract of Indian-owned land into a national park in a rather heavy-handed manner. A scenic drive with a couple of stops along the Badlands Loop Road, a long winding hike past amazing natural pyramids on the Castle Trail, or a short stroll from the car into the heart of the parks strange formations will likely leave the casual visitor with a strange appreciation for a land that is indeed, bad. Then, of course, there were the badlands, rising from the western horizon as we approached until the formations towered above us. But, for those who are interested in doing so, there's very little information out there. The only way in is via a gravel road, then two-track, that runs East from the BIA 27, across from the White River Visitor Center. My route covered about thirty miles in two days, and that was enough, for now. Maybe this is a place where signs could only ever misdirect. Today, we understand that these well-meaning folks quite possibly meant bad in the same way that RUN DMC meant bad when they threw down the fresh lyrics not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good. It is also recommended that wilderness campers take along a compass and topographical map (available from Trails Illustrated, 800-962-1643, and from the visitors center). Theres only one place to park a vehicle though (other than on the shoulder of a country road, which may not be safe or even legal) the White River Visitor Center at the Southeast corner of the unit. The park is home to a seemingly endless arrays of small, winding canyons, jagged ridges, green grasslands, abrupt bluffs, and towering spires. The large map of the park in full beneath them contains information about roads, trails, visitor centers, and overlooks. French fur trappers were the first of many European arrivals who, in time, would supplant the Lakota. The South Unit holds as many possibilities as there are hikers with an itch to explore. The established hiking trails, though short, are perfectly situated -- the Door Trail, which begins three miles from the visitors center, wends through a ''door'' in the Badlands Wall and deposits you in the midst of the formations. Nevertheless, the park reports that hundreds of fossils are found each year by visitors, with 375 fossils reported in 2019 alone. Shadows climbed up the walls, and the rock appeared to turn purple -- a gentle purple, almost a lavender -- as the sun sank lower. It is operated by an energetic woman named Nellie Cuny, who has lived in the area all her life -- how long that is exactly she won't say, though she will confess to being a grandmother a few times over. Various sites are listed in the Western part of the map representing the Black Hills, including Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Custer State Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Most of the animals in the mural have no modern analog, like three small, striped sheep-like creatures (Oreodonts) gathered in a group close to an enormous hog-like creature (Archaeotherium) with large teeth. The Stronghold Table is remote. Accessing the Palmer Creek area requires advance permission from adjacent landowners whose land would be crossed en route to Palmer Creek. By the mid-18th century, they were replaced by Sioux, or Lakota, who adopted the use of horses from Spaniards and came to dominate the region. Halfway through the Badlands Loop Road is Conata Road, a 9-mile dirt-gravel road which connects the Loop Road (north) to Highway 44 (south). It is roughly the shape of a spoon, with the handle to the east and the bowl to the west. Neither ranger could provide us with one. ''People have been lost for days.'' Of course the Badlands were just a teaser of what was to come when I arrived in the true west, but they remain in my mind as one of the coolest early scenes from my first trip west.
